IR Detection of Low-Mass Secondaries in Spectroscopic Binaries
This paper outlines an infrared spectroscopic technique to measure the radial velocities of faint secondaries in known single-lined binaries. The paper presents our H band observations with the CSHELL and the Phoenix spectrographs and describes detections of three low-mass secondaries in main-sequence binaries: G147-36, G 164-67, and HD 144284, with mass ratios of 0.562± 0.011, 0.423 ± 0.042, a...
متن کاملA Survey for Spectroscopic Binaries among Very Low Mass Stars
We report on the results of a survey for radial velocity variability in a heterogeneous sample of very low mass stars and brown dwarfs. One distinguishing characteristic of the survey is its time span, which allows an overlap between spectroscopic binaries and those that can be found by high angular resolution imaging. Despite our relatively low velocity precision, we are able to place a new co...
متن کاملSpectroscopic binaries with components of similar mass
The assertion that there is an intrinsic excess of binaries with mass ratios q ≃ 1-the twin hypothesis-is investigated. A strong version of this hypothesis (Hs), due to Lucy & Ricco (1979) and Tokovinin (2000), refers to a narrow peak in the distribution function ψ(q) for q > ∼ 0.95. A weak version (Hw), due to Halbwachs et al. (2003), refers to a broad peak for q > ∼ 0.8. Current data on SB2's...
متن کاملThe LuckyCam survey for very low mass binaries – II. 13 new M4.5–M6.0 binaries
We present results from a high angular resolution survey of 77 very low mass (VLM) binary systems with 6.0 V − K colour 7.5 and proper motion 0.15 arcsec yr−1. 21 VLM binaries were detected, 13 of them new discoveries. The new binary systems range in separation between 0.18 and 1.3 arcsec. The distance-corrected binary fraction is 13.6+6.5 −4 per cent, in agreement with previous results. Nine o...
متن کاملSpectroscopic Orbits for Three Binaries with Low-mass Companions and the Distribution of Secondary Masses
We present orbital solutions for three low-amplitude spectroscopic binaries discovered in a sample of 20 solar-type IAU radial-velocity standard stars observed with the Digital Speedometers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. We update the orbital solutions for HD 114762 and HD 140913, and present a preliminary new solution for HD 29587. For all three orbits the minimum mass for...
